Career Ready: Darius’ inspiring journey at MDL

A glimpse into how the Career Ready programme empowers young talent through real industry experience at MDL.

At MDL, we are proud to support the Career Ready programme, offering young people the chance to experience working life and explore their potential in a real business environment. One of our placement students this summer was Darius Turcu-Georgescu, who had already spent a year on the Career Ready programme with an MDL mentor and who went on to embrace every opportunity during his four-week placement at Maritime House.

From the outset, Darius immersed himself in the business, quickly adapting to the professional environment. He spent much of his time with the procurement team, where he assisted with live tasks and learnt first-hand how support, prioritisation and accuracy come together in practice.

But Darius’ placement went far beyond procurement. He rotated through multiple departments, from logistics and HR to proposals, sales and drafting, gaining a holistic understanding of how MDL operates.

One of his standout contributions was a case study project, designed to simulate a real-life operational challenge. Darius reached out across departments, piecing together how a project flows through the business and presented a clear, structured conclusion. He balanced curiosity with professionalism, a valuable takeaway for any young professional.

He also experienced MDL’s values in action. From observing the relaxed honesty of supplier meetings, to witnessing the detail-driven precision of an internal audit, to finding ways to be more efficient in repetitive tasks, Darius saw how values are lived day-to-day.

His placement concluded with the Brunch & Learn session, where he presented his reflections and learnings to the whole company.

The Career Ready programme proved to be a fantastic opportunity for Darius to build his network, develop practical skills and experience a culture where every voice is heard. He excelled during his placement and left a lasting impression on the teams he worked with.

“My time at Maritime Developments Ltd through the Career Ready Programme has been a defining experience in my early career journey,” Darius said. “From day one, I was welcomed not just as a student but as a valued member of the team. The mentorship that I received, especially in the procurement team, taught me how support, prioritisation and accuracy all come together in a real business environment.

“I gained hands on experience, but more importantly, I learned the value of curiosity, consistency and collaboration. MDL didn’t just show me what a successful business looks like; they showed me what a healthy culture looks like – where ideas are encouraged and young people are trusted to grow.

“Finishing my internship was a real moment of pride, but also one of gratitude. I leave MDL inspired, equipped and ready to build on everything I have learned.”

Reflecting on Darius’ time with MDL, his mentor Claudia shared:

“Being a mentor through the Career Ready programme has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Over the 18-month journey, I had the pleasure of mentoring Darius, who fully embraced every aspect of the programme. His enthusiasm and commitment made it much easier for me to manage the mentoring process and ensure he was getting the most out of it.

“Career Ready is a truly inspiring charity. It provides young people with the tools, guidance and opportunities to grow both personally and professionally. Watching Darius develop over the course of the programme was a powerful reminder of the impact this initiative can have. His confidence was admirable and his ability to take on new challenges and experiences was great to see.

“The skills Darius has developed involving communication, resilience and professionalism will hopefully serve him well as he moves forward in his career. I’m proud to have played a part in his journey and grateful to Career Ready for making it possible.”

We thank Darius for his enthusiasm, curiosity and professionalism, and we look forward to seeing where his career journey takes him.
