Derek Smith CEO and Founder

Derek Smith - CEO and Founder

Since founding MDL in 1999, he has been developing and engraining the company’s mission, vision and core values. From the docks of Peterhead, where he began his career as a marine service technician, to heading an energy solutions business with a global reach - Derek has an extensive background in the maritime industry and knows every facet of the business: from detailed design, engineering, manufacturing and growth business management.

Passionate about being the best place to work and delivering the best customer experience, Derek’s main focus is to fuel the innovative drive across all aspects of the business, maintain high QHSE principles and ensure adherence to governmental, regulatory and ethical standards befitting a global business.

Despite the exponential growth of the company, Derek is committed to MDL’s roots in the North-east of Scotland and ensuring the business continues to give back to the local communities – be it through apprenticeship opportunities or charitable initiatives.

George Mackintosh Chief Operations Officer

George Mackintosh - Chief Operations Officer

George has been overseeing successful project delivery since becoming an MDL Director in 2012. He came “from the back deck”, having started his career as a field service technician, before applying his experience in an operations manager role in the back-deck equipment business.

George’s extensive track record covers all stages of a project’s lifecycle: from design and engineering, to manufacturing and process optimisation, to building innovation – a wealth of hands-on expertise, paramount to building MDL's market-leading fleet.

To this day, he consistently shares his accumulated knowledge, delivers innovation to customers’ operations and pushes the boundaries of how MDL equipment continues to set the “best-in-class” standard across the rental and newbuild markets.

Gary Wilson Chief Commercial Officer

Gary Wilson - Chief Commercial Officer

Gary joined as CCO in 2025, bringing over 30 years of international experience in the energy sector. He has a proven track record in business growth, strategic development and operational leadership, having guided organisations through periods of expansion, integration and transformation across Europe, the Middle East and the Americas.

Starting his career in project management, Gary progressed into senior leadership roles as Managing Director and VP EMEA overseeing projects, business development and global operations.

He brings to MDL experience in winch systems and deck equipment, strengthening the company’s strategic capability and supporting its continued focus on integrated back-deck solutions.

Martin Shaw Chief Financial Officer

Martin Shaw - Chief Financial Officer

Martin joined MDL as CFO in 2024, bringing over 30 years of multinational experience in financial leadership across the energy and marine industries.

He has previously held CFO roles at Swire Energy Services and Ocean Installer, where he honed his expertise in financial strategy, governance, and operational efficiency.

At MDL, Martin is responsible for reinforcing the company’s financial structure and supporting strategic growth as MDL expands in both traditional and renewable markets.

Brian Meldrum Chairman

Brian Meldrum - Chairman

For 60 years, Brian has been involved in growing businesses from the inside, finding opportunity where others only saw risk. Having stared his career as a service technician in the scrap metal industry, he progressed through the ranks until acquiring John Lawrie Metals in the 1980s. He continued expanding the business to new locations in the UK and overseas until he sold it in late 2010s, having grown it from £200k to c.£90m turnover and establishing it in the top 10 UK pipe/scrap metal companies.

Brian’s track record of other successfully sold businesses includes Drill Gear, Oil Tube and Xodus. Only two weeks after concluding the sale of JLM, he was on the search of his next venture – “unable to sit still”. Today, he manages a range of properties across Scotland including supermarkets, office blocks, industrial units and hotels.

In his role of Non-executive Chairman in MDL, he supports the Board with his business acumen acquired through lifelong management of global operations – together with his unquestionable wit.

Andrew Blaquiere Executive Business Development Director

Andrew Blaquiere - Executive Business Development Director

Andrew is a mechanical engineer by trade and brings extensive knowledge on risers, moorings and flex-lay operations from a detailed engineering and project management perspective. Over the course of his career, Andrew moved from his engineering roots into various sales and commercial management positions in Houston, Texas and in 2020 he relocated to Aberdeen, UK to join as Managing Director.

In his current role, Andrew drives growth by identifying new market opportunities, shaping strategic partnerships and extending the company’s presence across the energy sectors.

He works closely with the CCO to define business development strategy, leveraging MDL’s versatile technology and proven track-record to deliver safe, optimised operations for MDL clients across the world.

Aleksandra Jurczak Director of Strategy & Marketing

Aleksandra Jurczak - Director of Strategy & Marketing

As a Chartered Marketing and business development leader with over a decade of experience in the offshore energy markets, Aleksandra brings to the Board a robust background in strategic brand development and market expansion.

Having joined MDL in 2014 from her previous career as a journalist, Aleks has been part of MDL expanding its internal capabilities and global presence: from growing brand recognition to developing strategic roadmaps for new business development, to deliver maximised returns for all stakeholders .

As Director of Strategy & Marketing, she leads the company’s focus on long-term growth, overseeing the alignment of strategic priorities across both traditional and renewable energy sectors and enhancing MDL’s position across core and emerging markets.

Ramsay Keay Projects Director

Ramsay Keay - Projects Director

Ramsay joined MDL in 2024 as Projects Director, focused on enhancing MDL’s project execution capabilities, streamlining delivery and ensuring the highest standards of customer service globally, across all of MDL’s business units.

From his previous strategic and senior management roles across the traditional and renewable energy sectors, including experience with electricity transmission and distribution and Tier 1 energy contractors, he is equipped with extensive engineering and project management expertise in complex operations.

Ramsay's objective as Project Director is to enhance project execution capabilities to increase the company's role in diversifying the energy mix, by delivering technically demanding scopes to a growing client base worldwide.

David Hunt Technical Director

David Hunt - Technical Director

David joined MDL in 2025 as Technical Director, leading the growth of the company’s engineering capability in line with its strategic direction. With over 20 years’ international offshore experience, he has a strong technical background in flexible installation, decommissioning and saturation diving projects.

David brings a project management mindset to every challenge, drawing heavily on Mission Command Project Management and Association for Project Management to drive structured, high-quality delivery. He thrives in high-pressure environments, building high-performing teams that deliver results and celebrating success along the way.

David is passionate about engaging with people at all levels of the business and he enjoys travelling to stay connected with teams and operations on the ground. His mission at MDL is to embed innovation, strengthen technical delivery and help shape the company’s future through engineering excellence.

Lee Thornton Sales and Commercial Director

Lee Thornton - Sales and Commercial Director

Lee joined MDL in January 2024, bringing 20 years of offshore, operational and commercial experience across the energy sector. He began his career offshore in operations before moving into technical sales and business development, giving him a solid grounding in both project delivery and client engagement.

Prior to joining MDL, Lee held senior commercial and operations roles including Regional Manager for the Americas, where he was responsible for establishing a new business entity and developing its market presence across the Americas.

Promoted to Sales and Commercial Director in 2025, Lee has supported MDL’s global presence and growth, helping to align the company’s commercial and operational focus. His hands-on background and straightforward approach ensure MDL continues to deliver practical, value-driven solutions for its customers worldwide.

Dave Gardiner Managing Director - PESB

Dave Gardiner - Managing Director - PESB

Dave joined MDL in 2017 and in that time he has played a key role in shaping strategic direction, driving growth and leading the front-end sales and business development teams.

He took on the role of Managing Director for the Peterhead Energy Service Base (PESB) in 2025 to lead MDL's port strategy for delivering fully integrated storage, handling and marshalling solutions for clients across current and developing energy sectors. Dave brings over two decades of industry experience to the leadership team.

He began his career delivering complex projects at TechnipFMC, ranging in value from £5 million to £350 million, gaining deep expertise in project execution, commercial management and cross-functional collaboration. Known for building high-performing teams and developing talent, he is passionate about coaching, mentoring and delivering an excellent client experience.

Graeme Little Financial Director

Graeme Little - Financial Director

Graeme is a Chartered Accountant with ICAS. Having joined MDL in 2019 as Senior Finance Manager, his role has evolved with the business growth, leading to his appointment as Finance Director in 2025. To date, Graeme has been heavily involved in the digitalisation of the business, influencing data-driven decisions to accelerate business growth.

Prior to joining MDL, Graeme held a variety of roles at a professional services firm, encompassing both corporate finance and auditing, bringing a strong foundation of forecasting, fundraising, recovery planning and due diligence skills to his role.

Graeme's blend of expertise and experience is fundamental to supporting MDL's continued growth and the development of the Peterhead Energy Service Base.
