Scottish Apprenticeship Week 2025

Shaping the Future of the Energy Sector

Scottish Apprenticeship Week is an exciting time to celebrate the incredible talent and potential within our workforce. At MDL, we take pride in fostering the next generation of expert professionals with skills that are transferrable across various sectors in the energy industry and marine operations.

Our apprenticeship programmes are designed to equip aspiring technical specialists with essential skills for their careers, through on-the job learning on all our distinct in-house specialities, including electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, systems and software - skills that directly correlate with enabling sustainable energy transition.

And since learning is a two-way process, we wanted to understand what our apprentices consider their most valuable skill acquired at MDL to date – and how they believe it would help them in the future.

Here's what they had to say:

Ryan Anderson, Mechanical Apprentice

“Since starting my apprenticeship, I have learned how to problem solve under pressure. I believe this skill will benefit me in the near future, because if I’m ever in a situation where I come across an obstacle, I have the confidence on how to work through it and become more independent in my role.”

Ricky Milne, Electrical Apprentice

“The most valuable skill I have learned at MDL is how electrical systems are wired, and what makes them run and operate efficiently. This will help me in the future as I will have a very good understanding of electrical systems - and somebody will always need an electrician to have power!”

Logan Donald, Electrical Apprentice

“The most valuable skill I have learned so far is being able to communicate with others and work as a team. This will help in the future to build good team relationships and help make building machines easier.”

Leah Brown, Mechanical Apprentice

“A valuable skill I have learned and understood well is the use and application of closed-loop control systems, which I can apply to any level of control within my current role.”

Lewis Robertson, Mechanical Apprentice

“I've been working at MDL for the last 2 years and over that time, I believe my most valuable skill is taking initiative in most situations at work. I have learned to work with others as a team but also improved my skills enough to work independently when needed. MDL has taught me to take more responsibility and to take pride in my work. I hope my efforts and skills become noticed over time and allow for more opportunities to present itself to expand my skill set at MDL.”

Our apprentices gain hands-on experience in areas such as manufacture, upgrades and testing of specialist equipment as well as problem-solving under pressure - skills that are directly applicable to the challenges of offshore energy operations and maintenance.
