A perfect score for MDL Apprentices

MDL has recently lost 3 of its Apprentices – seeing them all graduate into qualified technicians!

Evaldas, Daniel and Liam successfully completed their 4-year apprenticeships in their respective specialities: electrical, fabrication and hydraulics.

Each of the young recruits impressed their team leads with their focus, hard work and dedication to MDL values, especially in delivering high quality of service to each client every time.

During their apprenticeship, they experienced all aspects of working in MDL: from assembly of new electro-hydraulic systems for the company’s equipment fleet, to performing Asset Maintenance & Engineering scopes at clients’ onshore and offshore production facilities, to mobilising and operating MDL equipment on overseas flex-lay projects.

Evaldas shared with us his highlights:

“I really like that with this job no day is ever the same. During my apprenticeship I was given many opportunities to learn new things and gain new experiences. Some days I was offshore on troubleshooting missions, and other days I overhauled and built new equipment in the yard. As long as it didn’t rain, every day was a good day!

“I am very interested in projects that involve building something new, especially big machines. When you have been working on building a machine in the yard you know exactly how everything works. It’s also an opportunity to do something that you haven’t done before which means you can learn new skills.”

All three former apprentices are now part of One Team MDL, simultaneously pursuing their own growth and development plans.

As a globally operating company, a lot of what we do is looking beyond borders and to the future – and that is what our Apprentices are.

Alex Lamb, MDL Service Team Lead, said:

“These guys are the unpolished block and it’s up to MDL to give them the hands-on experience. Get the right team and you’ll succeed: once you have those committed and keen young guys serving their time, that’s half the battle.

“Our Apprentices are also the ones taking us back to our roots. These highly motivated - and often local people - see this time as the first step towards a fulfilling career.

“Our Apprenticeship programmes are their opportunity to gain hands-on experience while being mentored and guided by their senior colleagues who fire the young peoples’ enthusiasm for our industry.”

MDL’s Apprenticeship programme continues across the company and all year round. Alex Keith, who is currently in his fourth year, said:

“My apprenticeship at MDL has been very diverse allowing me to cover a large scope of electrical engineering tasks.

“Through my apprenticeship I was able to develop an in-depth understanding of this field of work and discovered my interest in the industry.

“Currently I am undertaking a Graduate Apprenticeship at Robert Gordon University alongside my work and in collaboration with MDL. This allows me to study towards an Instrumentation and Control Engineering Degree (BEng).“
