MDL completes cable repair offshore Mexico
An MDL spread has been deployed for a subsea cable repair scope 30km off the south-east coast of Mexico.
The project saw an MDL cable handling spread used for the recovery of a fibre optic / electric mid-voltage cable to enable an on-board repair, which included splicing in a new length before re-deploying subsea.
The MDL package consisted of two 2-track tensioners alongside a bespoke skidding system, which was designed and manufactured for the project. The winch package for handling the quadrant was supplied from the MDL Winches & Lifting Solutions range, made up of five winches and associated hydraulic power units, and mobilised from MDL’s USA equipment base in Houma, Louisiana.
Scott Manson, MDL Project Manager – Flexlay Solutions, said:
“The bespoke tensioner skidding system was key to the success of this project. It was designed and engineered by our specialist team to ensure optimum placement of the tensioners on the back deck. The resulting compact layout ensured the tensioners were in the optimal location to carry out the cable recovery and subsequent re-installation, and made effective use of the available back deck.”
Speaking about the expertise behind MDL, Scott added:
“One of MDL’s biggest strengths is our people. An MDL team was onboard the vessel throughout the project, ensuring a safe execution through expert operation of equipment but also applying their long-term experience in handling of delicate products. It’s that combined offering of market-leading technology and knowledgeable crew that gives our clients confidence on maintenance scopes like this one.
"MDL has a truly global footprint, as emphasised by this recent project offshore Mexico. Wherever we are executing projects for clients, they can be confident that MDL will deliver the best solution and people for the planned scope of work.”
