Newbuild Equipment Case Study

800Te Electric Reel Drive System

Unique solution, tailored to vessel

Challenge

With the arrival of their new Jones Act vessel the Ocean Evolution, Oceaneering was looking for a reel drive system that would maximise the vessel’s capabilities without compromising on deck space. Additional requirements included skidding fully loaded reels and an A60-rated fireproof control cabin to conform with US Coast Guard requirements.

MDL Solution

MDL’s response was the MDL-RDS-800: a solution capable of safely handling 800Te loads in dynamic offshore conditions, and over 1300Te onshore. At 2.7m wide and 9.4m tall, this was the largest and yet most compact system in MDL’s portfolio, and an industry first. The system retained all of the key features of the third-generation MDL RDS “on steroids”. This included the MDL track and cradle system, with the complete package capable of handling reels up to 14m diameter.

Outcomes

Once the client received the system in Peterhead, MDL continued to support the mobilisation in Mobile, AL, followed by training the Oceaneering personnel on equipment operation. The MDL team also operated the system on its first project in the Gulf of Mexico.
