Flexlay Case Study
From Scottish quay to Brazilian waters
Turnkey support package for an independent operator
Challenge
Brazilian operator PRIO was looking to deliver maximum production at minimum cost from an ageing deepwater field in the Campos basin. The redevelopment project required the installation of 6 reels of various flexibles - two of which had been stored long-term in Scotland on their original reel; it was unclear whether the reel could be safely transported across the Atlantic and installed offshore.
MDL Solution
Initially, MDL provided reel inspection at the storage location; as the reel was determined to be unsafe for offshore deployment, MDL undertook the complete Project Management & Engineering of the product transpooling onto an MDL certified installation reel which was then safely relocated to Brazil. MDL continued to support PRIO on the offshore execution; we worked closely with the local project engineering contractor appointed by PRIO to provide a tailored lay spread - optimised for the supply vessel procured by PRIO and mobilised in Brazil - together with expert personnel to operate the equipment.
Outcomes
The production flowlines, umbilicals and TCP jumpers were successfully installed in the field ahead of PRIO’s execution schedule. After the revitalisation plan, the field is expected to produce at over 40,000 boed. Iuri Rossi, Subsea Manager for PRIO, said: “We understand MDL as strategic partner for PRIO, specially for the field redevelopments that require installation of new flexibles/umbilicals and for replacement of old assets. Since PRIO moves really fast, we need partners with same DNA, dynamic and looking for challenges.”
