Brazil gas lift flowline replacement
Installation methodology feasibility study
Challenge
A 2.5†gas lift flowline in the Pampo Field offshore Brazil, connecting the PM-49 platform to a producing well, had been non-producing since 2016 due to damage within a section connecting the well to the platform. Following acquisition of the asset, the client sought to reinstate production by replacing the damaged section with a compatible flexible flowline. The replacement line exceeded the original length, requiring reassessment of the lay route to ensure compatibility with existing subsea infrastructure, while the condition of the damaged section created challenges for safe disconnection and recovery.
MDL Solution
MDL conducted a feasibility study to assess the recovery and replacement methodology. The study covered recovery and hydrostatic testing of the candidate flexible, alongside retrieval of the damaged section using ROV-enabled Grayloc disconnections and subsea cutting. Installation of the replacement line was assessed with a modified lay route to accommodate the additional length. MDL also defined the required back-deck spread and specified minimum vessel requirements to support the operation.
Outcomes
The study confirmed the technical feasibility of safely replacing the damaged flowline section and provided a clear methodology for offshore execution. By repurposing an existing flexible asset, the client was able to restore connection to PM-49 in a cost-efficient and environmentally responsible manner. The defined approach also supported a safe installation campaign and reduced operational risk, particularly during recovery of the damaged section.
