Hawser Winch Load Pin Changeout

Scheduled asset maintenance for efficient repairs

Challenge

A North Sea Operator encountered a critical issue with a seized load pin on a hawser winch located at the stern of their FSU. The functionality of the pin was essential for the client’s planned replacement of the hawser on the reel. Therefore, removing the load pin became a task that required immediate attention.

MDL Solution

MDL successfully resolved the issue utilising a custom-designed strong-back assembly, incorporating hydraulic cylinders to apply force to the seized pin without damaging the surrounding components. Additional contingency plans had been in place, including heating equipment to weaken the bond between components, thereby improving the efficiency of the jacking operation.

Outcomes

The swift success of MDL’s approach minimised the costs associated with delays to offload schedules and facilitated seamless progress for the client’s larger project, ensuring timely completion and operational continuity.
