Dual HLS

Tripling lay capacity with a portable package

Challenge

A Brazilian operator had challenged EPCI Contractors to provide a triple-lay solution for an upcoming SURF installation campaign. A long-standing client of MDL turned to us for a tailored solution that would fit on their pipelay vessel that was already operational off South America; the intention was to efficiently add two further firing lines to the existing lay capability of the vessel, at minimum disruption to ongoing operations or booked schedule.

MDL Approach

Having delivered a package of equipment for the vessel when it was a newly built, MDL was familiar with the deck layout and could tailor the approach from the onset, taking into account any space constraints from other equipment and deck geometry. To deliver the required installation of two lines in parallel up to 50-tonne back tension, MDL designed an integrated horizontal lay package. The custom-built structure is based on existing MDL HLS systems in order to retain all the beneficial features, while providing a smaller overall footprint. As an existing OEM of an electrical back-deck equipment package on board the vessel, together with in-house electrical and control systems expertise, MDL would be able to safely interface the new unit with the TLS SCADA system.

MDL Solution

The integrated package consists of a Double HLS mobilised with MDL’s gold standard 4-track tensioners and featuring an outboard chute with rollers to reduce friction (adjustable to product diameter); pivoting davit arms and a runway beam system to aid buoyancy module handling; fully-retractable work platforms for convenient port calls or during transit; and a retractable hang-off assembly with integrated load cell and options for hang-off plates and tulip or flare to fully control product suspension and movement. In order to maintain vessel functionality in other areas, the Double HLS accommodates the existing load-out firing line, with the HLS structure constructed in such a way as to provide a clear passage through the system, while minimising friction points to prevent damage to the product in transit. The complete package also includes a modular integrated deck deflector structure to efficiently manage two crossing firing lines: from aft reels and the under-deck carousel starboard forward. With portability being an inherent feature of each MDL system, the modular package can travel to the client’s desired location for assembly off critical path and efficient installation onboard the vessel during dock time.
