MDL enables multi-phase umbilical lay in Norway
MDL has completed a multi-phase umbilical tieback in the Norwegian North Sea.
Maritime Developments (MDL) has completed a multi-phase tieback in the Norwegian North Sea.
The scope covered the installation of 12 umbilical reels ranging from 9.6m - 12.0m using MDL modular equipment spread, reconfigured throughout the project to meet the specific handling requirements of each phase.
The master system was MDL’s Generation 3 Reel Drive System and Integrated Track & Cradle System. The RDS was integrated with a third-party 2-track tensioner and an MDL overboarding chute during trip four to accommodate dual cross-section cable transitions.
Scott Manson, MDL Flexlay Project Manager, said:
“Delivering a campaign across multiple phases required good forward planning and close collaboration with both the Installation Contractor and the MDL internal engineering department. Our ability to adapt our spread for each stage was key to maintaining project efficiency and safety offshore.
“This campaign adds to the successful track record we have built in Norway over the last decade, overcoming handling challenges both off and onshore. This extensive expertise means we are able to hit the ground running on every new project and swiftly adapt to a campaign’s evolving needs.”
